The modern Minesweeper that we know was developed at Microsoft in the late 1980s. A version of a mine puzzle game was created by Curt Johnson for IBM’s OS/2, and it was later ported to Windows with help from Robert Donner. For competitions and rankings only the programs “Minesweeper Arbiter”, “Minesweeper X” and “Viennasweeper” are used. Based on Minesweeper, the paper-based game lighting was developed.
